John 19:38

The Text-Critical English New Testament

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate if he could take away Jesus' body. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took the body away.

Nevertheless, many even among the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.

No one, however, was speaking openly about him for fear of the Jews.

(His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess that Jesus was the Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

When they had fulfilled all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb.

And the greater part of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence through my imprisonment and are far more bold to speak the word without fear.
