Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.
When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead
After saying this, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away,
and many of the Jews had joined the women who were with Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.
So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, behold, the one yoʋ love is sick.”
Now the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it.
Meanwhile a large crowd of the Jews found out that Jesus was there, so they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
In those days she became sick and died, so they washed her body and laid it in an upper room.
