When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men.”

The people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!”

Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, since he was the one who took the lead in speaking.

Paul and Barnabas became aware of it and fled for refuge to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding region.

The people were expecting that he would soon swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after waiting expectantly for a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

From the least to the greatest, they paid close attention to him, saying, “This man is the great power of God.”
