Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after they had received an order for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was full of idols.

But I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find my brother Titus. So I took leave of the people there and went on to Macedonia.

As for us, brothers, when we were bereaved of you for a brief hour (being physically absent, but with you in our hearts), we longed with great eagerness to see you face to face.

For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out about your faith, lest somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor had been in vain.
