He was not that Light, but that he might bear witness of that Light.
And he confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”
“You yourselves are witnesses for me that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but I am sent ahead of Him.’
And Sha’ul said, “Yoḥanan indeed immersed with an immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the One who is coming after him, that is, in Messiah יהושע.”
He was the true Light, which enlightens every man, coming into the world.
