As a father has compassion for his children, So יהוה has compassion for those who fear Him.

Do not eat the bread of one having an evil eye, Nor desire his delicacies;

A man with an evil eye runs after wealth, And does not know that poverty awaits him.

“Would a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Though they forget, I never forget you.

Trust no friend, rely on no companion, guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom.

“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Look, those wearing soft garments are in the houses of sovereigns.

Is it not right for me to do what I wish with my own? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’

“When your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own being, entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other mighty ones’– which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers,

“Be on guard lest there be a thought of Beliya‛al in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is near,’ and your eye is evil against your poor brother and you give him naught. And he shall cry out to יהוה against you, and it shall be a sin in you.

“And you shall eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom יהוה your Elohim has given you, in the siege and distress in which your enemies distress you.

against giving any of them the flesh of his children that he eats, because it is all that has been left to him in the siege and distress with which your enemy distresses you in all your gates.
