For in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird.

As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy one to those who send him.

Poor is he who works with a lazy hand, But the hand of the hard worker makes rich.

The being of the lazy one craves, but has not; While the being of the hard workers are enriched.

The way of a lazy one is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the straight is a highway.

Also, he who is slack in his work Is a brother of a master destroyer.

Laziness makes one fall into a deep sleep, And an idle being suffers hunger.

A lazy one buries his hand in a dish, And does not bring it back to his mouth.

The lazy one does not plough after the autumn; At harvest time he inquires – there is none!

The desire of the lazy man slays him, For his hands refused to work.

The lazy one says, “There is a lion outside! I am going to be killed in the streets!”

Hear, my son, and be wise, And guide your heart in the way.

There are four matters Which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise:

The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer;

How long would you lie down, O lazy one? When do you arise from your sleep?

An ox knows its owner and a donkey its master’s crib – Yisra’ĕ

“Even a stork in the heavens knows her appointed times. And a turtledove, and a swallow, and a thrush observe the time of their coming. But My people do not know the right-ruling of יהוה.

“And his master answering, said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.

“Look at the birds of the heaven, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into storehouses, yet your heavenly Father does feed them. Are you not worth more than they?

not idle in duty, ardent in spirit, serving the Master;

in order that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through belief and patience inherit the promises.
