יהושע  said to him, “It has also been written, ‘You shall not try יהוה  your Elohim.’ ”

neither let us try Messiah, as some of them also tried, and were destroyed by serpents,

And again and again they tried Ě

where your fathers tried Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years.

And he called the name of the place Massah and Meriḇ

Therefore the people strove with Mosheh, and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Mosheh said to them, “Why do you strive with me? Why do you try יהוה ?”

But greedily lusted in the wilderness, And tried Ě

“When your fathers tried Me, Have proved Me, though they saw My work.

‘And now we are calling the proud blessed – not only are the doers of wrongness built up, but they also try Elohim and escape.’ ”

Yet they tried and rebelled Against the Most High Elohim, And did not guard His witnesses,

for none of these men who have seen My esteem and the signs which I did in Mitsrayim and in the wilderness, and have tried Me now these ten times, and have disobeyed My voice,

But He answering, said, “It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of יהוה.’ ”

To the Torah and to the witness! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because they have no daybreak.

Then יהושע  said to him, “Go, Satan! For it has been written, ‘You shall worship יהוה  your Elohim, and Him alone you shall serve.’ ”

יהושע  said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner-stone. This was from יהוה, and it is marvellous in our eyes’?

and said to Him, “Do You hear what these say?” And יהושע  said to them, “Yea, have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nurslings You have perfected praise’?”

And יהושע  answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not try יהוה  your Elohim.’ ”

“Now then, why do you try Elohim by putting a yoke on the neck of the taught ones which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
