Give them, O יהוה  – give what? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife and a man of contention to all the earth! I have neither lent for interest, nor have men lent to me for interest. All of them are reviling me.

Upon You I have leaned from my birth; You took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of You.

Like a snail which melts away as it moves, Like a woman’s stillbirth, Let them not see the sun!

For it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.

Why were there knees to receive me? Or breasts for me to suck?

Therefore I commended the dead who were already dead, more than the living who are still alive.

And better than both is he who has never existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

because I was not slain from the womb, so that my mother should have been my grave and her womb forever great.

If a man brings forth a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his being is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say that a premature birth is better than he,

even the sun it has not seen – it has more rest than that man.
