For a man might labour with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he leaves his heritage to a man who has not laboured for it. That too is futile and a great evil.

“And now, יהוה, what do I wait for? My expectancy is in You.

For he sees wise men die, The foolish and the ignorant both perish, And shall leave their wealth to others.

Their graves are their houses, forever; Their dwelling places, to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.

So I turned my heart and despaired of all the labour in which I had toiled under the sun.

And I saw that all the toil and skill of the work bring envy between man and his neighbour. That too is futile and feeding on wind.

There is one, without a second, who has neither son nor brother. And there is no end to all his labours. His eye also is not satisfied with riches. “And for whom am I toiling and depriving myself of good?” That too is futility, and an evil task.

Wisdom is better than weapons of conflict, but one sinner destroys much good.

“Do you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, and do right-ruling and righteousness? Then it was well with him.

“But your eyes and your heart are only upon your own greedy gain, and on shedding innocent blood, and on oppression and on doing violence.”
