Now the nearby nations heap their scorn upon us, scoffing, mocking us incessantly.

You’ve made us a thorn in the side of all the neighboring lands, and now they just laugh at us with their mocking scorn.

All the passersby attack and rob me while my neighbors mock!

So I brought disgrace on the holy priests of the holy sanctuary and brought destruction to Jacob, humiliation and scorn to Israel.

I will punish them with such a disaster that everyone on earth will tremble in horror when they hear about it. I will force the people of Judah to go to foreign countries, where they will be an object of scorn, cursing, and insult.

I started with Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. Their kings and leaders were removed from power in disgrace and made an object of horror, derision, and a curse, as they are today.

Yes, I, Yahweh, the God of Israel, Commander of Angel Armies, say to you: Just as my furious anger was poured out on the people of Jerusalem, so will my fury be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will be something that people will curse, and people will use your name when they pronounce a curse. You will be a horrifying sight, and people will make fun of you, and you will never see this place again.’ ”

“We were mocked and ashamed; we were covered with disgrace because foreigners had entered the temple of Yahweh’s holy places.”

Everyone is groaning, longing for anything to eat; they have traded their treasures for food in order to keep themselves alive. “Look, Yahweh, and consider how pathetic I have become!

Yahweh, remember all that we’ve endured; look and see our disgrace.

Nations near and far will taunt you, O infamous city, full of turmoil.

And you will know that I, Yahweh, have heard all the vile insults that you have uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, “Look! They have been ruined and left desolate. Let’s wipe them out!”

I will silence the insults of the nations. You will never again have to hear the mocking of the peoples, and you will never again cause your nation to stumble. I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.’ ”

“So prophesy to them what I, Lord Yahweh, have to say: ‘Your enemies have attacked you from all directions and turned your land into an empty ruin. This enabled other nations to take possession of your land. You also became the subject of people’s malicious talk and evil slander.

Lord, you have always demonstrated your faithfulness to Israel, so now please turn your fierce anger away from Jerusalem. It belongs to you and sits on the hill where sacrifice is made. All the other nations who live around us despise your city and your people because of the sins of our ancestors and because of our sins also.
