Their words are unreliable. Destruction is in their hearts, drawing people into their darkness with their speeches. They are smooth-tongued deceivers, flattering with their words.

Now teach me, Yahweh, all about your ways and tell me what to do. Make it clear for me to understand, for I am surrounded by waiting enemies.

Flattery can often be used as a trap to hide ulterior motives and take advantage of you.

The path of the righteous is smooth and level; God, the Just One, you make a clear path for them.

There is nothing more deceitful than the heart of man; who can understand it? Man’s heart is sick, in need of healing.

Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart so that you may be rescued. How long will evil thoughts and harmful schemes find a resting place in you?

The Lord said, “You Pharisees are like those who will wipe clean only the outside of a cup or bowl, leaving the inside filthy.

“You Pharisees, what hypocrites! Your true character is hidden, like an unmarked grave that hides the corruption inside, defiling all who come in contact with you.”

Their words release a stench, like the smell of death—foul and filthy! Deceitful lies roll off their tongues. The venom of a viper drips from their lips.

God is our witness that when we came to encourage you, we never once used cunning compliments as a pretext for greed,
