I was desperate for you to help me in my struggles, and you did!

I look up to the mountains and hills, longing for God’s help. But then I realize that our true help and protection is only from the Lord, our Creator who made the heavens and the earth.

I was overjoyed when they said, “Let’s go up to the house of the Lord.”

O God-Enthroned in heaven, I lift my eyes toward you in worship.

What if God had not been on our side? Let all Israel admit this!

Those who trust in the Lord are as unshakable, as unmovable as mighty Mount Zion!

It was like a dream come true when you freed us from our bondage and brought us back to Zion!

If God’s grace doesn’t help the builders, they will labor in vain to build a house. If God’s mercy doesn’t protect the city, all the sentries will circle it in vain.

How joyous are those who love the Lord and bow low before God, ready to obey him!

I’ve had to live in poverty and trouble all my life. Now I’m humiliated, broken, and helpless before your terrors and I can’t take it anymore.

“So go ahead—keep trusting in your sorceries and the witchcraft you’ve practiced since your youth. Perhaps you might succeed! Perhaps you’ll scare away your impending doom!

“Go, preach this message publicly for all Jerusalem to hear: ‘Yahweh says to you: “ ‘I fondly remember the single-hearted devotion you had for me in your youth. You loved me deeply as a bride loves a bridegroom. You followed me closely in the desert, in a land where no crops grow.

I warned you in your prosperous times, but you said, ‘I don’t want to hear it.’ You have treated me like that ever since your youth, refusing to listen to me.

Judah’s people have gone into exile under harsh labor and much pain. They found no place to rest living among foreigners. All their enemies have seized them in the narrow passes.

While they were still girls, they became prostitutes in Egypt. Men caressed their breasts; their virgin breasts were first fondled there.

Every time they went into battle, Yahweh raised his hand against them to their undoing, just as he had warned them, and they were in great distress.

Therefore Yahweh’s blazing anger rose up against them. He surrendered them to Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Mesopotamia. He kept the Israelites in bondage to him for eight years.
