Matthew 21:34

The Passion Translation

At harvest time he sent his servants to the tenants to collect the portion that was due him as the lord of the vineyard.

What more could I have done for my vineyard? When I expected it to bear luscious grapes, why did it produce only wild, worthless grapes?

I have repeatedly sent my servants the prophets to you, saying, “Repent, every one of you, from your evil actions and correct the way you’ve been living. Do not chase after other gods to serve them, and you will continue to live on the land I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you have not paid attention or listened to me.

But the tenants seized his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

But when the tenants saw the son, they said, ‘This is the heir! Let’s kill him and then we can have his inheritance!’

“You tell me, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what do you think he will do to those tenants?”

They answered, “He will bring a horrible death to those who did this evil and he will completely destroy them. Then he’ll lease his vineyard to different tenants who will be faithful to give him the portion he deserves.”

On the day the festivities were set to begin, he sent his servants to summon all the invited guests, but they chose not to come.

Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “There once was a man who planted a vineyard and put a secure fence around it. He dug a pit for its winepress and erected a watch tower. Then he leased it to tenant-farmers and traveled abroad.

But the tenants saw their chance and said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come! Let’s kill him, and then we’ll inherit it all!’

So what do you think the owner of the vineyard will do? He will come and put to death those tenants and give his vineyard to others.

Jesus taught the people using this story: “A man once planted a vineyard, then leased it out to tenants. Then he left to go abroad and was away for a long time.
