And the people became offended and began to turn against him. Jesus said, “There’s only one place a prophet isn’t honored—his own hometown!”

Yahweh, Israel’s Kinsman-Redeemer and Holy One, says to the one who is deeply despised and repulsed by rulers and a slave to the ruling class: “Kings will see and stand up in respect; princes will bow down to honor the faithfulness of Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of deep sorrows who was no stranger to suffering and grief. We hid our faces from him in disgust and considered him a nobody, not worthy of respect.

He will become for you a holy sanctuary but for them a stone people trip over. He is a rock that causes the two houses of Israel to stumble—a trap and a snare for the people of Jerusalem.

And tell John that the blessing of heaven comes to those who are not offended over me.”

And their unbelief kept him from doing many mighty miracles in Nazareth.

Afterward, Jesus left Capernaum and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.

King Herod soon heard about Jesus, for the name of Jesus was on everyone’s lips. Some were even saying about him, “John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers flow from him!”

Isn’t this Mary’s son, the carpenter, the brother of Jacob, Joseph, Judah, and Simon? And don’t his sisters all live here in Nazareth?” And they took offense at him.

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is treated with honor everywhere except in his own hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house.”

But let me tell you, no prophet is welcomed or honored in his own hometown.

And tell John these words: ‘The blessing of heaven comes upon those who never lose their faith in me, no matter what happens.’ ”

Now Jesus knew that prophets are honored everywhere except in their own hometown.

“How can he say these things about himself? We know him, and we know his parents. How dare he say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’ ”

Without anyone telling him, Jesus knew they were outraged and told them, “Are you offended over my teaching?
