But Herod both feared and stood in awe of John and kept him safely in custody, because he was convinced that he was a righteous and holy man. Every time Herod heard John speak, it disturbed his soul, but he was drawn to him and was intrigued by his words.

As far as they are concerned, you are like an entertainer who sings a love song with a beautiful voice to a good musical accompaniment. They hear what you say, but no one will do it.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar concluded, “That was my dream. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to interpret its meaning, since not one of the wise men in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me, but I know that you can, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you.”

So Herod wanted John dead, but he was afraid of the crowds who flocked to John because they considered him to be a prophet.

They stepped away and debated among themselves, saying, “How should we answer this? If we say from heaven, he will say to us, ‘Then why didn’t you respond to John and believe what he said?’ But if we deny that God gave John his authority, we’ll be mobbed by the people, for they’re convinced that John was God’s prophet.”

When the chief priests and religious scholars heard this, they began to hatch a plot as to how they could eliminate Jesus. But they feared him and his influence, because the entire crowd was totally captivated by his teaching.

And what is sown on gravel represents those who hear the message and receive it joyfully,

“John was a blazing, shining torch, and for a short time, you basked in his light with great joy.

They all stood there, dumbfounded and astonished, saying to one another, “What is this phenomenon?”

When the captain of the temple guard and the leading priests heard this report, they were perplexed and at a loss over what to make of it.
