The Passion Translation

Jesus replied, “You don’t have a clue what you’re asking for! Are you prepared to drink from the cup of suffering that I am about to drink? And are you able to endure the baptism into death that I am about to experience?”

A foaming cup filled with judgment mixed with fury is in the hands of the Lord Yahweh, full to the brim and ready to run over. He filled it up for the wicked, and they will drink it down to the very last drop!

This is what your sovereign ruler, Lord Yahweh, your God, the Mighty Defender of his people, says: “Look! I have removed from your hand the intoxicating cup that made you stagger. You will no longer drink from the bowl of my anger.

Yahweh, Israel’s God, spoke these words to me: “Jeremiah, take this cup from my hand; it is the cup of the wine of my wrath. Make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it.

Are you seeking personal greatness for yourself? Do not seek it, for I am now going to bring disaster on all humanity, but I will ensure that you escape with your life wherever you may go,’ declares Yahweh.”

Then he walked a short distance away, and overcome with grief, he threw himself facedown on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if there is any way you can deliver me from this suffering, please take it from me. Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfill your plan for me.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to strengthen him.

And while they were publicly confessing their sins, he would immerse them in the Jordan River.

He prayed, “Abba, my Father, all things are possible for you. Please—remove this cup of suffering! Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfill your plan for me.”

But first I must be immersed into the baptism of God’s judgment, and I am consumed with passion as I await its fulfillment.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup of agony away from me. But no matter what, your will must be mine.”

Jesus ordered Peter, “Put your sword away! Do you really think I will avoid the suffering which my Father has assigned to me?”

And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words.

And if you ask, you won’t receive it for you’re asking with corrupt motives, seeking only to fulfill your own selfish desires.
