Shortly afterward, the younger son packed up all his belongings and traveled off to see the world. He journeyed to a far-off land where he soon wasted all he was given in a binge of extravagant and reckless living.

Those who abandon the worship of God will perish. The false and unfaithful will be silenced, never heard from again.

The one who is too lazy to look for work is the same one who wastes his life away.

To love pleasure for pleasure’s sake will introduce you to poverty. Indulging in a life of luxury will never make you wealthy.

In wisdom’s house you’ll find delightful treasures and the oil of the Holy Spirit. But the stupid squander what they’ve been given.

Like a bird that has fallen from its nest is the one who is dislodged from his home.

To be obedient to what you’ve been taught proves you’re an honorable child, but to socialize with the lawless brings shame to your parents.

When you love wisdom, your father is overjoyed. But when you associate with prostitutes, you waste your wealth in exchange for disgrace.

Prostitutes reduce a man to poverty, and the adulteress steals your soul— she may even cost you your life!

Oh, how this nation keeps sinning! See them dragging the heavy burden of their guilt! They are corrupt children, descendants of evildoers. They have turned their backs on the Lord God and despised the Holy One of Israel! They have cut themselves off from the help of God!

But instead, you celebrated with joy and festivity, slaughtering the sheep and the fatted ox, saying, “We will feast on meat and drink much wine. Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

Leave this narrow way; turn aside from this harsh path. Don’t confront us anymore with the Holy One of Israel!”

Each one says, “Let’s get wine and liquor and have a party! And tomorrow, more of the same, except even better!”

“My people are guilty of a double sin: they have abandoned me, the Spring of Living Water, and they have dug for themselves cisterns — cracked cisterns that hold no water.”

“O people of this generation, see the word of Yahweh: Have I been like a wilderness to Israel or a dangerous land full of gloom? Then why do my people say, ‘We’re free to do as we want, and we have no intention of returning to serve you anymore.’

He declares to you: “What did your ancestors find wrong with me that they would run so far away from me? They left me to follow worthless idols and themselves became worthless!

The younger son came to his father and said, ‘Father, don’t you think it’s time to give me my share of your estate?’ So the father went ahead and distributed between the two sons their inheritance.

“With everything spent and nothing left, he grew hungry, because there was a severe famine in that land.

Look at him! He comes back after wasting your wealth on prostitutes and reckless living, and here you are throwing a great feast to celebrate—for him!’

Jesus taught his disciples using this story: “Once a very rich man hired a manager to run his business and oversee all his wealth. But soon a rumor spread that the manager was wasting his master’s money.

Jesus continued. “There once was a very rich man who had the finest things imaginable, living every day enjoying his life of opulent luxury.

Yet look at you now! Everything is new! Although you were once distant and far away from God, now you have been brought delightfully close to him through the sacred blood of Jesus—you have actually been united to Christ!

For the Messiah has come to preach this sweet message of peace to you, the ones who were distant, and to those who are near.

For all the evil they have done will come crashing down on them. They consider it their great pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. When they come to your love feasts they are but stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions as they feast with you.
