Go ahead and cheat others dishonestly, but by mid-life, everything you’ve gained will fly away, like birds hatched from stolen eggs. You will be proven a fool in the end.

Isn’t it true that our hands were empty when we came into the world, and when we leave this world our hands will be empty again?

We live our lives like those living in shadows. All our activities and energies are spent for things that pass away. We gather, we hoard, we cling to our things, only to leave them all behind for who knows who.

But you don’t have a clue what tomorrow may bring. For your fleeting life is but a warm breath of air that is visible in the cold only for a moment and then vanishes!

For while some are saying, “Finally we have peace and security,” sudden destruction will arrive at their doorstep, like labor pains seizing a pregnant woman—and with no chance of escape!

You are foolish to ignore the greed and wickedness within you! Shouldn’t the one who cleans the outside also clean the inside?

It will be an instant end to all their life of ease; a blink of the eye and they’re swept away by sudden calamity! They’re all nothing more than momentary monarchs—

Go ahead and get rich on the backs of the poor, but all the wealth you gather will one day be given to those who are kind to the needy.

When judgment day comes, all the wealth of the world won’t help you one bit. So be rich in righteousness, for that’s the only thing that can save you in death.

But before they had even finished, even with their food still in their mouths, God’s fiery anger arose against them, killing the finest of their mighty men.

The brightest and best, along with the foolish and senseless, God sees that they all will die one day, leaving their houses and wealth to others. Even though they name streets and lands after themselves, hoping to have their memory endure beyond the grave, becoming legends in their own minds, their home address is now the cemetery!

Gaining wealth through dishonesty is no gain at all. But honesty brings you a lasting happiness.

One pretends to be rich but is poor. Another pretends to be poor but is quite rich.

Never brag about the plans you have for tomorrow, for you don’t have a clue what tomorrow may bring to you.

Each one says, “Let’s get wine and liquor and have a party! And tomorrow, more of the same, except even better!”

To all the rich of this world, I command you not to be wrapped in thoughts of pride over your prosperity, or rely on your wealth, for your riches are unreliable and nothing compared to the living God. Trust instead in the one who lavishes upon us all good things, fulfilling our every need.
