Then God said, “Let us make a man and a woman in our image to be like us. Let them reign over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, over the creatures that creep along the ground, and over the wild animals.”

Yahweh-God scooped up a lump of soil, sculpted a man, and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The man came alive—a living soul!

Only the withering soul would say to himself, “There is no God.” Anyone who thinks like this is corrupt and callous, devoid of what is good.

“Foolish ones, how much longer will you cling to your deception? How much longer will you mock wisdom, you cynical scorners who fight the facts?

Listen to me and you will be prudent and wise. For even the foolish and feeble can receive an understanding heart that will change their inner being.

‘Pay attention, you foolish and senseless people. They have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear.

You are deceived and blind! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?

You are blind to your evil. Shouldn’t the one who cleans the outside also be concerned with cleaning the inside? You need to have more than clean dishes; you need clean hearts!

“God said to him, ‘What a fool you are to trust in your riches and not in me! This very night the messengers of death will demand to take your life. Then who will get all the wealth you have stored up for yourself?’

Jesus said to them, “Why are you so thick-headed? Why do you find it so hard to believe every word the prophets have spoken?

Foolish man! Don’t you know that what you sow in the ground doesn’t germinate unless it dies?

And isn’t it true that we respect our earthly fathers even though they corrected and disciplined us? Then we should demonstrate an even greater respect for God, our spiritual Father, as we submit to his life-giving discipline.
