I will smash these people and this city as one smashes a potter’s vessel, never to be repaired. You will bury your dead here in Topheth, this unclean place; so many of you will die that there won’t be enough room to bury them.

“Is this man Coniah now thrown away like a worthless, broken pot that no one wants? Why are he and his offspring hurled out and taken away to a land they knew not?

“Both children and the elderly alike are lying dead in the dusty streets. My young men and maidens have both fallen by the sword. You have killed them on the day of your anger; you slaughtered them without mercy.

Our leaders have been taken and hanged; our elders have received no respect.

We are like common clay jars that carry this glorious treasure within, so that this immeasurable power will be seen as God’s, not ours.

In a palace you find many kinds of containers and tableware for many different uses. Some are beautifully inlaid with gold or silver, but some are made of wood or earthenware; some of them are used for banquets and special occasions, and some for everyday use.
