The face of Yahweh scattered them; he will look on them no more. They had no respect for the priests, no honor for her leaders.

Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath so relentless. I will divide your descendants throughout Jacob’s territory and scatter them throughout Israel.

And you scattered their children to distant lands to die as exiles.

Yet even so, you waited and waited, watching to see if they would turn and cry out to you for a father’s help. And then, when you heard their cry, you relented and you remembered your covenant, and you turned your heart toward them again, according to your abundant, overflowing, and limitless love.

I will punish them with such a disaster that everyone on earth will tremble in horror when they hear about it. I will force the people of Judah to go to foreign countries, where they will be an object of scorn, cursing, and insult.

Nebuzaradan, the field general, arrested Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank, and other temple officials.

“Look, Yahweh, and please consider. Whom have you ever treated this way? Should women eat their offspring, the little ones they have nursed? Should priests and prophets be slaughtered in the Lord’s sanctuary?

He wrecked his temple like a vineyard shack and utterly destroyed his meeting place. Yahweh erased the memory in Zion of his appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In the heat of his anger, he spurned both king and priest.

Our leaders have been taken and hanged; our elders have received no respect.

As a result, those of you who are parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents. I will punish you and scatter what remains of you to the winds.

It will be an entirely different covenant than the one I made with their fathers when I led them by my hand out of Egypt. For they did not remain faithful to my covenant, so I rejected them, says the Lord God.
