The Passion Translation

He wrecked his temple like a vineyard shack and utterly destroyed his meeting place. Yahweh erased the memory in Zion of his appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In the heat of his anger, he spurned both king and priest.

So Lord, why have you broken down your fence of favor around us? Trespassers can steal the fruit from off our vines, and now every wild beast comes breaking through our wall to ravage us. You’ve left us without protection!

You have torn down all my walls of defense and have made my every hiding place into ruins.

Stop bringing your meaningless offerings. Your burning incense stinks! Your sin-stained celebrations, your new moon festivals, Sabbaths, your various pious meetings—I can’t stand them!

And the daughter of Zion is left as helpless as a deserted shack in a vineyard or a flimsy shelter in a field of cucumbers— in every way like a city besieged!

So I brought disgrace on the holy priests of the holy sanctuary and brought destruction to Jacob, humiliation and scorn to Israel.

So let me tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard. I will tear down its fence and it will be plundered. I will break down its wall and it will be destroyed!

I will make it a wasteland, and no one will cultivate the land. It will grow only weeds and thorns! I will command the clouds and they will not drop their rain upon it!

For a short time your holy people possessed a holy place. But now our enemies have invaded and trampled down your sacred sanctuary.

Our holy temple, our source of pride, where our ancestors sang your praise, has been consumed by fire. All that we held dear has been destroyed.

But if you do not listen to me, if you treat the Sabbath as any other day on which you carry loads through the gates of Jerusalem, then I will set its gates on fire, and that fire will consume even the palaces of Jerusalem, and no one will be able to extinguish it!’ ”

Yes, I, Yahweh, the God of Israel, Commander of Angel Armies, say to you: Just as my furious anger was poured out on the people of Jerusalem, so will my fury be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will be something that people will curse, and people will use your name when they pronounce a curse. You will be a horrifying sight, and people will make fun of you, and you will never see this place again.’ ”

But here is a message for you. Yahweh says to you: ‘That which I have built I am about to knock down, and what I have planted I will uproot over the entire land.

Listen! Fugitives and refugees from the country of Babylon arrive in Zion, proclaiming on Mount Zion how Yahweh our God has punished the Babylonians for destroying his temple!”

The empty roads to Zion mourn, for no one travels to her sacred feasts anymore. The singing maidens suffer, and the priests can only groan. The city gates stand empty, and Zion can only moan.

The face of Yahweh scattered them; he will look on them no more. They had no respect for the priests, no honor for her leaders.

They captured Yahweh’s anointed leader, our king; the hope of our survival was caught in their traps. We thought that under his protective shadow we would live among the nations.

Our leaders have been taken and hanged; our elders have received no respect.

For he despised his oath by breaking the treaty to which he had pledged himself, and he will not go unpunished.
