Your enemies are a choir of scoffers and scolders. They hatefully sneer and glare at you. They gleefully exclaim, “We have destroyed her. This is the day we’ve been waiting for, and now we have lived to see it!”

while the wicked slander me with their lies. Even right in front of my face they lie through their teeth.

But the wicked take one look at a life lived like this and they grit their teeth in anger, not understanding their bliss. The wicked slink away speechless in the darkness that falls, where hope dies and all their dreams fade away to nothing, nothing at all!

Like ravenous, roaring lions tearing their prey, they pour curses from their mouths.

These nameless ruffians, mocking me like godless fools at a feast— how they delight in throwing mud on my name.

They open their mouths with ugly grins, gloating with glee over my every fault. “Look,” they say, “we caught him red-handed! We saw him fall with our own eyes!”

Let them all be ashamed of themselves, humiliated when they rejoice over my every blunder. Shame them, Lord, when they say, “We saw what he did. Now we have him right where we want him. Let’s get him while he’s down!” Make them look ridiculous when they exalt themselves over me. May they all be disgraced and dishonored!

Let the wicked keep plotting against the godly with all their sneers and arrogant jeers.

“He got what he deserved; it’s over for him! The spirit of infirmity is upon him, and he’ll never get over this illness.”

Not a day goes by without somebody harassing me. So many in their pride trample me under their feet.

From heaven he will send a father’s help to save me. He will trample down those who trample me. Pause in his presence He will always show me love by his gracious and constant care.

“See? Your ruins and devastated places will soon be overcrowded with settlers while your destroyers stay far away.

then I will make this temple into a pile of ruins just like I did to Shiloh. This city will become a worldwide object of cursing.’ ”

I will make them into a horrible sight to all the earth, a curse, a thing of horror, scorn, and derision to all the nations where I have driven them. I will afflict them with war, food shortages, and plague

“Israel was like straying lambs, driven away and scattered by lions. “First, the king of Assyria devoured them, and now, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has gnawed their bones.

Whoever came across them took advantage of them. Their enemies said, ‘We are not to blame, for they have sinned against Yahweh, the True Home of Justice, against Yahweh, the Living Hope of their ancestors.’

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, devoured us, chewed us up, and consumed us like a hungry man consumes a meal. Like a monster he swallowed us whole, filled his belly with our delicacies and then expelled us.

“They have heard my groans, yet I have no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad you have done this to me. You threatened me and kept your promise— oh, that the same would happen to them!

The Lord Yahweh says to you: “ ‘You will drink of the same cup as your sister, a large cup both deep and wide that contains much sorrow! Drink it all, for it will lead to mockery and insults!

Lord Yahweh says, “The Philistines took revenge on the people of Judah, with deep hatred. They did their best to destroy them because of their long-standing hatred.

Say to them, ‘Hear the words of Lord Yahweh. He says to you: You gloated when my temple became unfit for my presence. You celebrated when the land of Israel was left in ruins. And when the people of Judah were taken into captivity, you shouted, “Hooray!”

“ ‘Furthermore, Lord Yahweh says to you: Since you have clapped your hands and danced for joy, full of malicious glee at Israel’s fate,

“So prophesy to them what I, Lord Yahweh, have to say: ‘Your enemies have attacked you from all directions and turned your land into an empty ruin. This enabled other nations to take possession of your land. You also became the subject of people’s malicious talk and evil slander.

You will be mocked and insulted. Your downfall will be an appalling lesson to the surrounding nations. This will happen when I execute judgment on you in my furious anger and with my furious punishment. I, Yahweh, have spoken.

When they heard these things, they were overtaken with violent rage filling their souls, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
