“They have heard my groans, yet I have no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad you have done this to me. You threatened me and kept your promise— oh, that the same would happen to them!

But when I was the one who tripped up and stumbled, they came together to slander me, rejoicing in my time of trouble, tearing me to shreds with their lies and betrayal.

God laughs at the wicked and their plans, for he knows their day is coming!

So hear my cry and put an end to their strutting in pride, to those who gloat when I stumble in pain.

The Lord Yahweh has shattered the staff of the wicked, the brutal rod of the rulers.

With their unceasing blows they used it cruelly to strike down nations. They subdued nations in anger with unrelenting persecution.

“But rest assured, all those who devoured you will be devoured; all your enemies, every one of them, will go into captivity. Those who devastated you will be devastated, and all who made you their prey, I will make a prey.

And they will say, ‘Didn’t you make fun of Israel in the past? Didn’t you say Israel was nothing but crooks? Whenever you spoke of her, didn’t you shake your head in disgust?’

“I, Yahweh, say to the people of Babylon: You rejoiced when you robbed my people, my inheritance. You had a good time, making more noise than horses neighing and frolicking like playful heifers at the time of the threshing of grain.

Raise the war cry against her from all sides. She surrenders! The attackers have broken down her fortifications and walls. This is Yahweh’s vengeance! Take revenge on her. Do to them what they did to others.

“Assemble the archers and attack Babylon! Encamp around her and leave no way of escape. Treat her as she has treated others and repay her for all she has done, for she was arrogant and defiant to Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

I am against you, O arrogant one! I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, decree: Your day of reckoning has now come, the time for me to punish you is here.

“But now,” Yahweh says, “you will see with your own eyes how I repay you, Babylon and the Chaldeans, for all the wrongs you have done to Zion.

“For people throughout the world have been slain by Babylon. And now, because of Israel’s slaughtered ones, Babylon will fall.”

“This is why I weep bitterly, as tears stream down my cheeks. Truly, no one is here to comfort me or revive my life. My children no longer have a future, for the enemy has triumphed.”

She is weeping bitterly through the night, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Among all her lovers, not one can be found to comfort her. Her friends have all betrayed her and have now become her enemies.

“Let all their wickedness condemn them. Deal with them as you have dealt with me for all my sins. My groaning seems endless, and I am sick at heart.”

The empty roads to Zion mourn, for no one travels to her sacred feasts anymore. The singing maidens suffer, and the priests can only groan. The city gates stand empty, and Zion can only moan.

Jerusalem has committed a horrible sin and has become an object of scorn. All who once honored her now despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. Shunned, she groans aloud and turns to hide her face in shame.

All who pass your way applaud in mockery. They wag their heads with contempt, saying over beloved Jerusalem, “Is this really the city called The Perfection of Beauty, The Joy of All the Earth?”

Your enemies are a choir of scoffers and scolders. They hatefully sneer and glare at you. They gleefully exclaim, “We have destroyed her. This is the day we’ve been waiting for, and now we have lived to see it!”

“Son of man, the people of Tyre have been cheering the demise of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Hooray! She is fallen! The Gateway to the Nations is shattered! An opportunity has swung open for us. Now we will grow rich off her destruction!’

So repay to her double the same treatment that she has treated others with— pay her back double for all her deeds and make her drink twice the brew she gave to others!
