Now where are all your homemade gods? They are nowhere to be found. Let them arise and save you in your time of trouble! Judah, you have as many gods as you have villages!

All those ‘lovers’ you had have abandoned you; they could not care less. Yes, I struck you with cruel punishment because of your great guilt and countless sins. I struck you mercilessly like you were my enemy.

And you, desolate Zion, what are you doing dressing up in scarlet, adorning yourself in ornaments of gold and putting on eye shadow? You’re making yourself beautiful for nothing. Your lovers don’t want you anymore. In fact, they seek your life!

How lonely sits the city once thronged with people! Once great among the nations, she is now lonely like a widow. Once a fair princess ruling among the provinces, now a shackled servant.

Everyone is groaning, longing for anything to eat; they have traded their treasures for food in order to keep themselves alive. “Look, Yahweh, and consider how pathetic I have become!

She is weeping bitterly through the night, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Among all her lovers, not one can be found to comfort her. Her friends have all betrayed her and have now become her enemies.

“Look, Yahweh, and please consider. Whom have you ever treated this way? Should women eat their offspring, the little ones they have nursed? Should priests and prophets be slaughtered in the Lord’s sanctuary?

We strained our eyes continually and looked, watching for help that never came. From our watchtowers we waited for a nation to help, for a nation that could not save us.

Our leaders have been taken and hanged; our elders have received no respect.
