Og, the king of Bashan, was one of the last of the race of giants. He reigned in the cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei. He ruled over all of Bashan, the northern half of Gilead, to the boundary of Sihon, king of Heshbon.

Moses had given half of Gilead to this half-tribe of Manasseh, which descended from Manasseh’s son Machir, including the cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei, where king Og had once ruled.
