Joshua 7:2

The Passion Translation

Joshua sent spies from Jericho to Ai (a small city near Beth Aven, southeast of Bethel), with orders to spy out the land. So the spies left for Ai.

From there, he journeyed on toward the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built another altar to Yahweh where he prayed and worshiped Yahweh.

He named that place Bethel; though the city was once called Luz.

If you solicit good advice, then your plans will succeed. So don’t charge into battle without wisdom, for wars are won by skillful strategy.

Wise strategy is necessary to wage war, and with many astute advisers you’ll see the path to victory more clearly.

The Assyrian army attacked Aiath; they passed over into Migron and stored their equipment at Michmash.

Weep and wail, Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Shriek, women of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn; run back and forth in confusion! For enemies will lead Molech away and take him captive with all his priests and servants.

Now, remember, it is I who sends you out, even though you feel vulnerable as lambs going into a pack of wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes yet as harmless as doves.”

So be very careful how you live, not being like those with no understanding, but live honorably with true wisdom, for we are living in evil times. Take full advantage of every day as you spend your life for his purposes.

Their northern border began in the east at the Jordan River and went up the slope north of Jericho and westward through the hill country as far as the desert near the city of Beth Aven.

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent out two spies from their camp at Acacia. He told them, “Go and explore the land of Canaan, especially Jericho.” They went and arrived at Jericho and entered the house of Rahab the prostitute and lodged there.

When they returned to Joshua, they reported to him, “There is no need to trouble the whole army to conquer Ai. The people are so few that two or three thousand men could attack it and take the city.”
