Then the Lord’s angel said to Philip, “Now go south from Jerusalem on the desert road to Gaza.”

Yahweh gave the men of Israel victory over the Amorites that day, the day when Joshua stood before the people and prayed to Yahweh: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon! Moon, stay where you are over the valley of Aijalon!”

So Joshua conquered the entire region: the Judean hills, the southern desert, all the land of Goshen, the foothills, the lowlands of the Jordan Valley, the northern hill country of Israel including its lowlands—

so that there were no surviving Anakim in Israelite territory. Some survived but only in the Philistine cities of Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

Goshen, Holon, and Giloh—eleven towns and their villages.

One day, Samson went to Gaza, a Philistine town, and slept with a prostitute there.

So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him down to Gaza, where they bound him with bronze chains and forced him to grind grain in the prison.
