The Passion Translation

So Joshua and the Israelites nearly killed them all—almost to a man—although a few escaped into the fortified cities.

Yahweh says: “Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem, and sound the alarm throughout the land of Judah! Cry out! Shout it out, and say, ‘Gather together and let us run into the fortified cities!’

Why are we just sitting here? Let’s band together and go inside our walled cities and await our death, since Yahweh our God has condemned us to die. He has given us our bitter poison to drink, for we have sinned against him.

Joshua inflicted a crushing defeat on them at Gibeon, for Yahweh threw the Amorites into a panic at the sudden sight of Israel’s army! Yahweh empowered Joshua and his army to chase them in the direction of the Beth Horon ascent, and they slaughtered the kings’ armies all the way to Azekah and the city of Makkedah.

But don’t stop! Pursue your enemies! Cut off their retreat and don’t let them reach their cities, for Yahweh your God has given them into your hand!”

The whole army returned safely to Joshua at the camp in Makkedah. No one dared speak against the Israelites.

Joshua conquered all those royal cities and their kings. He destroyed them all, as Yahweh’s servant Moses had commanded.

Yahweh fought alongside Joshua’s fighting men to defeat them. Part of the Israelite army attacked and pursued the retreating forces as far north as the cities of Misrephoth Maim and Sidon. Another part of the Israelite army pursued the enemy as far east as the valley of Mizpah and crushed them all, leaving no survivors.

Joshua’s men killed all the inhabitants of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them. They all fell by the sword. Then the Israelites turned to attack Ai and killed those who were still there.
