The Passion Translation

When they heard this, the disciples replied, “Lord, if he has just fallen asleep, then he’ll get better.”

He told them, “You must leave, for the little girl is not dead; she’s only asleep.” Then everyone began to ridicule him.

Then Jesus added, “Lazarus, our friend, has just fallen asleep. It’s time that I go and awaken him.”

Jesus was speaking about Lazarus’ death, but the disciples presumed he was talking about natural sleep.
