John 11:1

The Passion Translation

In the village of Bethany there was a man named Lazarus, and his sisters, Mary and Martha. Mary was the one who would anoint Jesus’ feet with costly perfume and dry his feet with her long hair. One day Lazarus became very sick to the point of death.

Not long afterward, Joseph received the news that his father’s health was failing, so he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.

Jesus then left at once for the nearby village of Bethany, where he spent the night.

Now, as they were approaching Jerusalem, they arrived at the place of the stables near Bethany on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead

Then Jesus added, “Lazarus, our friend, has just fallen asleep. It’s time that I go and awaken him.”

Many friends of Mary and Martha had come from the region to console them over the loss of their brother.

So his sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, our brother Lazarus, the one you love, is very sick. Please come!”

All the eyewitnesses of the miracle Jesus performed when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead kept spreading the news about Jesus to everyone.

When the word got out that Jesus was not far from Jerusalem, a large crowd came out to see him, and they also wanted to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.

But then she became very ill and died. After the disciples prepared her body for burial, they laid her in an upstairs room.
