Beware of your neighbor and do not even trust your brother, for every brother is a cheater, and every friend is a slanderer.

They are the most stubborn of rebels. Each one spreads slander and practices dishonesty. They are as hard as bronze and iron.

“A brother will betray his brother unto death—even a father his child! Children will rise up against their parents and have them put to death.

For even your brothers and relatives have betrayed you, and are in full pursuit of you. Don’t believe them when they speak to you as friends.”

Lying about and slandering people are as bad as hitting them with a club, or wounding them with an arrow, or stabbing them with a sword.

The one who hides his hatred while pretending to be your friend is nothing but a liar. But the one who slanders you behind your back proves that he’s a fool, never to be trusted.

They refuse to slander or insult others; they’ll never listen to gossip or rumors, nor would they ever harm a friend with their words.

“Not anymore,” the man said to him. “Your new name is Israel, for you have struggled both with God and with people and have overcome.”

Never take selfish advantage of a brother or sister in this matter, for we’ve already told you and solemnly warned you that the Lord is the avenger in all these things.

“You can expect betrayal even by your parents, your brothers, your relatives and friends—and yes, some of you will die as martyrs.

“Be on your guard! For there will be those who will betray you before their religious councils and brutally beat you with whips in their public gatherings.

In your city are those who slander in order to have someone murdered. Living among you are those who eat food sacrificed to false gods in mountain shrines and commit obscene acts.

spouting lies in false testimony, and stirring up strife between friends. These are entirely despicable to God!

There are six evils God truly hates and a seventh that is an abomination to him:

I will silence those who secretly want to slander my friends, and I will not tolerate the proud and arrogant.

We have rebelled and even tried to deny Yahweh; we have forsaken our God. Our speech stirs up oppression and revolt, and our hearts conceive, then confess, lies.

Their words are deadly arrows poisoned with deceit. Each one greets his neighbor with ‘Shalom,’ but deep in his heart, he secretly sets a trap for him.

For troublemakers are restless if they are not involved in evil. They are not satisfied until they have brought someone harm.

They feed on darkness and drink until they’re drunk on the wine of wickedness.

The leaders have led them astray, and the citizens are left in confusion.
