The Passion Translation

I will weep and wail for the mountains and sing mournful songs for the pasturelands, for they are burned, with no one passing through. No one hears the lowing of cattle; birds and beasts of the field have fled—they are gone.

“See? Your ruins and devastated places will soon be overcrowded with settlers while your destroyers stay far away.

Many rulers have destroyed my vineyard. They have trampled my property and have made my magnificent fields into a desolate desert.

They have left it a wasteland— wasted, waterless, and empty before me. The whole land is laid waste, yet there is no one who seems to care.

How much longer will the land mourn? How much longer must the birds and animals perish? Even the grass of every field withers because of the wickedness of these people! For the people boast, “God doesn’t see what happens to us.”

The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights, Panting for air like jackals; their eyes are glazed over because there is no pasture.”

His enemies have raged against him, roaring like fierce lions. They leveled his cities, left them without inhabitants, and devastated his land.

They never stopped to ask themselves, ‘Where is Yahweh, who rescued us from Egypt? Where is the Yahweh who led us through the wilderness, through a barren wasteland with its pits and problems? Where is the one who led us through a land of deserts and droughts, dangers and deep darkness — where no one lives nor even passes through?’

The land is full of people unfaithful to him; they lead wicked lives and misuse their power. Because of a curse, the land is in mourning, and the pastures of the wilderness have dried up.

For a nation is attacking Babylon from the north that will reduce her nation to a desert. People and animals will flee, and no one will inhabit it.”

“People of Jerusalem, cut off your long hair and throw it away, and raise your song of mourning on the hilltops, for Yahweh has rejected and abandoned the generation of his fury.

My joy has vanished, grief grips my soul, and I am sick at heart.

“This is why I weep bitterly, as tears stream down my cheeks. Truly, no one is here to comfort me or revive my life. My children no longer have a future, for the enemy has triumphed.”

My eyes have no tears left, and my stomach is tied in knots. My heart is spilled out into the dirt over the destruction of the daughter of my people. Little toddlers and children collapse in the streets of the city.

“Or suppose I unleash wild animals on that country to roam through the land killing its people, making the land so dangerous that no one would dare pass through it.

“Son of man, sing a funeral song for Tyre.

No person or animal will pass through it. For forty years it will remain uninhabited.

I will turn the land into a total wasteland, and I will put an end to their arrogant power. Israel’s mountains will be so deserted that no one will pass that way again.

Wherever you live, your cities will be ruined and your shrines deserted. All your altars will be destroyed and desecrated, and your idols shall be broken and banished. Your incense altars will be chopped down, and all your works wiped out.
