Jeremiah 8:2

The Passion Translation

They will spread them out before the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, which they loved and served. They went after cosmic powers, inquired of them, bowed down before them in adoration, and worshiped them. Because they did these things, their bones will not be buried but will become fertilizer for the ground.

Soon, unheard-of terror will seize them while in their sins. God himself will one day scatter the bones of those who rose up against you. Doomed and rejected, they will be put to shame, for God has despised them.

Do to your enemies what you did at Endor, whose rotting corpses fertilized the land.

Repeat history, God! Make all their “noble ones” die like Oreb, Zebah, and Zalmunna, who said in their pride, “We will seize God’s people along with all their pleasant lands!”

And those who foolishly believed these prophecies will meet the same end. They will all die from war and food shortages, along with their wives and sons and daughters. Their bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem, with no one to bury them. For I will bring evil to them as they have been evil.”

Answer them, ‘Because your ancestors walked away from me, declares Yahweh, and followed other gods and served and worshiped them. They abandoned me and failed to keep my instruction.

They will die of deadly diseases. No one will mourn for them or bury them; their bodies will lie like dung on the ground. They will be consumed by the sword and by food shortages, and the birds and beasts will feast on their corpses.”

The least and the greatest alike will die in this land. They will not be buried. No one will mourn for them, cut themselves, or shave their heads to show their grief.

Both the houses of the kings of Judah and the houses of Jerusalem will be defiled like the place of Topheth—all the houses upon whose roofs offerings have been made to the whole host of heaven and drink offerings have been poured out to false gods.’ ”

He will have a donkey’s burial. He will be dragged outside the gates of Jerusalem and left on the ground to rot.”

Those whom Yahweh slaughters that day will be from all over the earth, and no one will mourn for them. No one will gather their bodies or bury them; they will lie as dung on the ground.

And the entire Hinnom Valley, with its bones and ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate eastward, will be consecrated and sacred to Yahweh. Jerusalem will never be overthrown or destroyed again.”

So now, I, Yahweh, say to you, King Jehoiakim of Judah, people will cast your dead body out on the ground, where it will rot and be exposed to the sun by day and the frost by night. And none of your descendants will succeed you on the throne of David.

Women, listen to the word of Yahweh and take to heart the word he speaks. Teach your daughters to mourn; teach your neighbor a funeral song.

For Death has crept in through our windows, forcing its way past our fortified defenses, cutting down the child playing outside and the young men in the streets.

Tell everyone: “This is the prophecy of Yahweh: ‘Corpses will lie unburied like dung on the open field, like stalks of grain after the reaper, with no one to gather them up.’ ”

I will leave you and all your fish on the ground to die in the desert. You will die in the open field, and I will feed you to the wild animals and the birds of heaven, and no one will collect your bones or bury them.

Your corpses will lie unburied in the open fields, for I, Lord Yahweh, have spoken.

I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols, and I will scatter your bones all around your altars.

Next he transported me to the north gate to the inner court of his temple. And there, at the entrance to Yahweh’s sanctuary, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men standing with their faces to the east worshiping the sun with their backs to Yahweh’s sanctuary. They bowed down to the east, before the rising sun.

“When God saw what they had done, he turned away from them and handed them over to the worship of the stars of heaven, as recorded in the prophetic writings: ‘People of Israel, you failed to worship me when you offered animal sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness.
