The Passion Translation

I will silence the sounds of mirth and gladness from the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, the happy sounds of wedding feasts—the voice of the bride and bridegroom, for the land will become a wasteland.’ ”

The light of a lamp will never shine in you again, Nor will the joyous laughter of a wedding be heard in you. Your merchants were once the tycoons of the world, But you deceived all the nations by your sorcery.

I will silence the sound of your songs, and the music of your stringed instruments will not be heard again.

Moreover, I will banish the voices of celebration and laughter from them and the sweet voices of the groom and his bride. I will silence the noise of grinding grain in the morning, and in the evening, lamps will no longer burn in their homes.

For here is what Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, the God of Israel, says: I will silence in this land the joyful shout of bride and bridegroom, the sounds of gladness and laughter. It will happen in your lifetime, before your very eyes.

Your country is devastated and your cities burned to the ground; foreigners plunder your crops before your eyes— with nothing but devastation and destruction in their wake!

“For I, Yahweh, have spoken: ‘The whole land will remain desolate; however, the end of the world is not yet.

Cries of mourning will be heard at the city gates; with the anguish of such great loss, she will sit down and grieve in the dirt.

“They say about this place, ‘It is a wasteland, without people or animals.’ But this is what I, Yahweh, say to you: In the desolate towns of Judah and in the abandoned streets of Jerusalem without people or animals, you will hear once more

Then I asked, “O Lord, for how long?” He answered, “Until their houses and cities are destroyed and uninhabited and their land a desolate wasteland.

Their young men fell on the battlefield and never came back. Their daughters never heard their wedding songs, since there was no one left to marry!

Yes, listen to what Yahweh thinks about Judah’s royal palace: “You are as glorious as Gilead to me, as beautiful as the summit of Lebanon; but I swear that I will make you as empty as a desert— like a ghost town.

Do not listen to them! Serve the king of Babylon and live a long life. Why should Jerusalem be destroyed?

So I let loose a firestorm of my anger, burning down the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem until nothing remained but a desolate wasteland, as it still is today.

The elders no longer give their advice; the young no longer make music.

I looked at the once fruitful land, now nothing but a desert, all its cities left in ruins before Yahweh’s burning anger.

the raucous shouts of joy and mirth and the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. You will once again hear the glad songs sung by those who bring thank offerings to my temple, singing, ‘We give thanks to mighty Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, for he is so good, and he will love you forever!’ “I, Yahweh, promise that I will bring back the country’s captives, as before.

Violence has grown up into a rod to punish their wickedness. None of these proud, evil people will survive. All their wealth and prestige will be swept away.
