Therefore, here is what the Sovereign One, the Lord God of Angel Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, decrees: “Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries and avenge myself on my foes!

All the idol-makers will be ashamed and disgraced, and each one will walk away in confusion.

She who was honored to have seven children grows faint; robbed of her children, she wasted away. Her sun has set while it is still day. She is shamed and disgraced. Any who are left alive, I will hand them over to the sword of their enemies,” declares Yahweh.

Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves! You stubbornly turned away even though Yahweh, your God, was leading you the right way.

Your own wickedness punishes you. Your own unfaithfulness rebukes you. Look deep into your heart and you will learn how evil and bitter it is to forsake me, Yahweh your God, and have no awe of me. I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, have spoken.”

But Yahweh is a mighty, fearless warrior standing at my side. My persecutors are the ones who will fall down and fail; disgraced by their failure, they will not succeed. Their shame will stick to them forever.

Now you will be disgraced and humiliated because of all your evil. Your leaders will be swept away like dust in the wind, and your lovers, the nations you trusted in, will be captured and dragged into captivity.

declares Yahweh. ‘But you have not listened to me and have provoked my anger by worshiping idols your own hands have made, to your own harm.’ ”

We deserve to lie down in our shame and be covered by our disgrace. Ever since we were young, we and our ancestors have sinned against our God, Yahweh. We failed to really listen to your voice, Yahweh our God.”

This disaster came to your people because of their evil deeds; they have worshiped foreign gods, which they have previously known nothing about nor have their ancestors. They have brought them offerings and provoked my anger.

Listen! I hear my beloved people crying out in despair throughout the land: “Is Yahweh no longer in Zion? Is her King not dwelling within her?” “So why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with their foreign, phony gods?”

For the voice of wailing is heard from Zion: ‘We are so ruined and shamed! We have had to leave our land because enemies have demolished our homes.’ ”

You slept with your well-endowed neighbors, the Egyptians, provoking my anger with your lifestyle of a prostitute.

Who would ever want to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Is that something you think you’re strong enough to endure?
