The Passion Translation

Raise the war cry against her from all sides. She surrenders! The attackers have broken down her fortifications and walls. This is Yahweh’s vengeance! Take revenge on her. Do to them what they did to others.

These warring weapons will bring vengeance on the nations and every resistant power—

Lord God Almighty, you are the God who takes vengeance on your enemies. It’s time for you to punish evil! Let your rays of revelation-light shine from your people and pierce the conscience of the wicked and punish them.

He put on righteousness as his body armor, salvation for a helmet; a garment of warring vengeance was his uniform and passion, his cape.

He will repay wrath to his enemies and retribution to his foes, according to what they have done. Reckoning is coming to the islands for what is due them.

I am sent to announce a new season of Yahweh’s grace and a time of God’s recompense on his enemies, to comfort all who are in sorrow,

For a day of vengeance was in my heart, and the time for my redeeming work had come.

For this is the day of Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, a day when he takes vengeance on his foes. The sword will devour until gorged, until drunk on their blood. For Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, is hosting a sacrificial feast in the land of the north, by the river Euphrates.

Archers! Take your positions against Babylon and surround her. Shoot at her! Empty your quiver, for she has sinned against Yahweh.

I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, had a work to do in Babylon, So, I opened my armory and brought out the mighty weapons of my wrath.

“Behold, like a lion suddenly comes out of the jungle of the Jordan to a rich pastureland, I will suddenly make the people of Babylon run away, and I will appoint a leader that I choose. For who can be compared to me? Who is able to challenge me? Name the ruler who can stand up to me.

Yahweh has stirred up a spirit of hostility in the king of the Medes because Yahweh’s plan is to destroy Babylon. This is Yahweh’s revenge for destroying his temple. “Sharpen the arrows; fill up your quivers!

For I have sworn by my great name, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, that I will fill your land with warriors as a swarm of locusts, and they will raise up the victory shout over you.”

“But now,” Yahweh says, “you will see with your own eyes how I repay you, Babylon and the Chaldeans, for all the wrongs you have done to Zion.

I have become your enemy,” says Yahweh, “O mountain of destruction, destroyer of the whole world! I will unleash my power against you, send you tumbling to the ground, and turn you into a mountain of soot and ashes.

Babylon’s warriors had enough of fighting, so they stayed inside their forts. With their courage melted away, they have been left like ordinary civilians. Their city gates have been broken through, and her houses are on fire.

This is what Yahweh says: “Look, I am taking up your cause to make sure you are avenged. I will dry up her water source and make her rivers run dry.

I will punish Bel, the god of Babylon, and make him give back what he has stolen. The people will no longer stream to him to bring him their offering. The walls of Babylon have fallen.”

“The attacking army will demolish the massive walls protecting Babylon and burn down the lofty gates of the city. The nations wear themselves out to no avail; they will see the flames destroy what they’ve done,” declares Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies.

Flee from Babylon! Save your lives! Don’t you perish when I punish her for her guilt; the time of revenge is here. Now Yahweh will pay her back for what she has done.

But what if our wrong shows how right God is? Doesn’t our bad serve the purpose of making God look good? (Of course, I’m only speaking from a human viewpoint.) Would that infer that God is unfair when he displays his anger against wrongdoing?

So repay to her double the same treatment that she has treated others with— pay her back double for all her deeds and make her drink twice the brew she gave to others!

All his judgments are right and true, For he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality. He has avenged on her the blood of his loving servants.”
