Therefore, a lion from the forest will attack them, and a desert wolf will ravage them. A leopard is prowling around their cities, waiting to tear those apart who venture out. For the people are rebellious; they’ve sinned repeatedly.

You turn off the light and it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest come out to prowl.

Your rulers are rebellious and companions of crooks. They are self-centered racketeers who love a bribe and who chase after payoffs. They don’t defend the fatherless or consider the rights of a helpless widow.

For our many rebellious deeds are stacked high before you; our sins testify against us. We are aware of our sins, and we know our evil deeds all too well.

Our guilty sins cry out against us; in our rebellion, time and time again, we have sinned against you. Yahweh, do something to help us, for the sake of your honor.

His enemies have raged against him, roaring like fierce lions. They leveled his cities, left them without inhabitants, and devastated his land.

Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves! You stubbornly turned away even though Yahweh, your God, was leading you the right way.

Your own wickedness punishes you. Your own unfaithfulness rebukes you. Look deep into your heart and you will learn how evil and bitter it is to forsake me, Yahweh your God, and have no awe of me. I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, have spoken.”

“O people of this generation, see the word of Yahweh: Have I been like a wilderness to Israel or a dangerous land full of gloom? Then why do my people say, ‘We’re free to do as we want, and we have no intention of returning to serve you anymore.’

The lion has left his lair, and their land is left a wasteland because of the sword of the oppressor and because of his fierce anger.

All those ‘lovers’ you had have abandoned you; they could not care less. Yes, I struck you with cruel punishment because of your great guilt and countless sins. I struck you mercilessly like you were my enemy.

There is no point in crying out over your pain, for your wound is incurable. I have treated you like this because of your great guilt and countless sins.

Yahweh’s anger will not relent until he has perfectly carried out what he has in mind. In the latter days, you will clearly understand this.

A nation-wrecker is on the prowl like a lion coming up from his lair. He is roused from his den to ransack your land. Your cities will be ruined and left without inhabitant.

“Behold, just as a lion suddenly comes out of the thickets of the Jordan to a rich pastureland, I will suddenly make the people of Edom run away. And I will appoint a leader that I choose. For who can be compared to me? Who is able to challenge me? Name for me the ruler who can stand up to me.

So why have you, the people of Jerusalem, continually refused to turn back to me? Why do you cling so tightly to your deception instead of coming home to me?’ ”

“Even the stork in the skies knows her season of migration. And migratory birds—the turtledove, the swallow, and the crane — instinctively take flight according to the times I have set for them, but my people pay no attention to the orders of Yahweh.

Her foes have the upper hand while her enemies are now at ease. For Yahweh has made Jerusalem suffer for her many, many sins. Her young children are taken into captivity as captives before the oppressor.

At the entry to every alley you put up your brothel and dragged your beauty through the mud. You spread your legs to all who passed by in countless acts of prostitution.

Within the land are leaders who are like a pack of wolves who rip apart their prey, shed blood, and kill people to get money dishonestly.

Yet she began sinking even deeper into her depraved sexual immorality, acting the way she did when she was a young prostitute in Egypt.

The first one was like a winged lion, with wings like an eagle. As I watched, its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the earth, standing on two feet like a person, and it was given a human heart.

After that, as I looked on, behold, there was another one that looked like a tiger. On its back were four large wings of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority for dominion.

It was like a leopard with feet like a bear’s, and its mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon shared his power, throne, and great authority with the wild beast.
