Yahweh, your eyes search for truth. You struck them down, but they felt no pain. You nearly destroyed them, but they still refused to accept correction. Their stubborn faces hardened like rock; they defiantly refused to repent.

The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “I slept with my father last night. Tonight, it’s your turn. We’ll get him drunk with wine, and you can sleep with him and we can preserve our family line through our father.”

I know that you delight to set your truth deep in my spirit. So come into the hidden places of my heart and teach me wisdom.

Satisfy me in your sweetness, and my song of joy will return. The places you have crushed within me will rejoice in your healing touch.

I was betrayed by my friend, though I lived in peace with him. While he was stretching out his hand of friendship, he was secretly breaking every promise he had ever made to me!

The wicked are shameless and stubborn, but the lovers of God have a holy confidence.

God passionately watches over his deep reservoir of revelation-knowledge, but he subverts the lies of those who pervert the truth.

You’ll awake only to say, “What hit me? I feel like I’ve been run over by a truck!” Yet off you’ll go, looking for another drink!

You can beat a fool half to death and still never beat the foolishness out of him.

Lord Yahweh, you lift your mighty hand, but they do not see it. Let them witness how much you love your people and be ashamed. Let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.

So he poured out the heat of his anger and they suffered the fury of war. His anger enveloped them in flames, but they still did not understand— consumed by fire yet they did not take it to heart.

I knew you were stubborn. Your neck is like a rod of iron, and you’re as hard-hearted as brass!

For the people did not repent and turn to the one who struck them or seek the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies.

I threw you to the wind like straw, scattering you throughout the cities of the earth. I made my people childless and killed them, since they would not repent from their ways.

(Yet they would not listen or obey; they stubbornly refused and would not obey or accept instruction.)

“Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, the God of Israel, says to you: ‘I am going to bring upon this city and all its nearby villages every disaster that I have decreed against them because they have stubbornly hardened their hearts and refused to listen to my words.’ ”

“I’ve wasted my time punishing you because you did not respond to my correction. With the ferocity of a hungry lion, you murdered the prophets I sent to you.

Therefore, I have withheld the rains, and the spring showers have not come. Yet, there you sit with the shameless, brazen look of a prostitute who refuses to blush.

You surpass all with your wise counsel and wise planning. Your miracles reveal your mighty power. Your eyes see everything people do, and you repay each one according to what their ways and actions deserve.

“I am Yahweh, the God of Israel, Commander of Angel Armies. Go and say to the people of Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must listen to me and receive instruction. Learn a lesson from the Rechabites, declares Yahweh.

Even now, you refuse to humble yourselves or be in awe of me. You have not followed my law or my teachings, which I set before you and your ancestors.

but my people did not listen to me or obey; rather, they stubbornly did more evil than their fathers.’

Then you will say to them: ‘You are the nation that refused to listen to the voice of your God, Yahweh. Truth has perished and disappeared from their lips, for they did not accept Yahweh’s correction.’ ”

So why have you, the people of Jerusalem, continually refused to turn back to me? Why do you cling so tightly to your deception instead of coming home to me?’ ”

I am sending you to a stubborn and hard-hearted people. Tell them, ‘Lord Yahweh says this.’

“ ‘Jerusalem, the filth of your sexual immorality is infamous. Although I have tried to purify you, you were not cleansed of your filth, so now you will never be purged of your filth until I have emptied out my fury upon you.

As the law of Moses warns, this calamity came upon us in full measure. And even now, Yahweh, we have not sought to please you, our God, by turning away from our wickedness and following your ways of truth.

We know that God’s judgment falls upon those who practice these things. God is always right, because he has all the facts.

And isn’t it true that we respect our earthly fathers even though they corrected and disciplined us? Then we should demonstrate an even greater respect for God, our spiritual Father, as we submit to his life-giving discipline.
