‘Pay attention, you foolish and senseless people. They have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear.

But you’d better watch out, you stupid fools! You’d better wise up! Why would you act like God doesn’t exist? Do you really think that God can’t hear their cries?

Why pay tuition to educate a fool? For he has no intention of acquiring true wisdom.

The trees are withered and stripped bare, and their women gather dead branches for firewood, because they are a people of no understanding. That is why their Maker will show them no compassion, and he who formed them will show them no favor.

Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, those who have ears but are deaf.

They have no clue what they’re doing and don’t comprehend how absurd it is! For they shut their eyes so they cannot see. They close their hearts so they cannot understand.

What wisdom could they glean from a block of wood? They are foolish blockheads, one and all.

“My people are foolish because they don’t know who I really am. They are reckless, senseless children. They think they are wise, but they are cunning in sinfulness and clueless in righteousness.”

“Declare this to the descendants of Jacob and spread it throughout Judah:

I thought, “These poor people are senseless, for they know neither God’s ways nor the justice of Yahweh.

If I speak to warn the remnant of Israel, no one will listen. Their ears are blocked, and they are incapable of hearing. The word of Yahweh has become an object of scorn; it’s no longer a pleasure for them.

Even while you were doing these things, I, Yahweh, spoke to you over and over and called to you, but you would neither listen nor answer me.

“Even the stork in the skies knows her season of migration. And migratory birds—the turtledove, the swallow, and the crane — instinctively take flight according to the times I have set for them, but my people pay no attention to the orders of Yahweh.

“Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes, but they will not see; they have ears, but they will not hear because they are bent on rebellion.

“For even when they see what I do, they will not understand, and when they hear what I say, they will learn nothing, otherwise they would repent and be forgiven.”

You have good eyes, yet you still don’t see, and you have good ears, yet you still don’t hear, neither do you remember.

God has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts to the truth. So with their eyes and hearts closed they cannot understand the truth nor turn to me so that I could instantly cleanse and heal them.

‘I send you to this people to say to them, “You will keep learning, but not understanding. You will keep staring at truth but not perceiving it.

Opposition to truth cannot be excused on the basis of ignorance, because from the creation of the world, the invisible qualities of God’s nature have been made visible, such as his eternal power and transcendence. He has made his wonderful attributes easily perceived, for seeing the visible makes us understand the invisible. So then, this leaves everyone without excuse.

Just as it is written: God granted them a spirit of deep slumber. He closed their eyes to the truth and prevented their ears from hearing up to this very day.
