The Passion Translation

Weep and wail, Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Shriek, women of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn; run back and forth in confusion! For enemies will lead Molech away and take him captive with all his priests and servants.

Wail, for the day of the Lord Yahweh is near! It will come with the destructive power of Shaddai.

Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city! Melt with fear, Philistia! For a cloud of smoke comes out of the north, and there is no straggler among them.

The people of Dibon went to their temple to weep; they went up to their high places to lament. Moab wails with sorrow over what happened to Mount Nebo and Mount Medeba. Humiliated, every head is shaved bald and every beard cut off.

So now Moab will wail; everyone will wail over the ruin of their country. Lament and grieve for the foundations of Kir-Hareseth.

A prophecy for Tyre and Sidon: Wail, you cargo ships of Tarshish! For Tyre, your port city, has fallen without a house or a harbor! Word has come to them from the land of Cyprus.

Cross over to Tarshish. Wail, you inhabitants of the coast.

Therefore, put on sackcloth, lament, and wail, for the burning anger of Yahweh has not turned away from us.

Yahweh, God of Israel, Commander of Angel Armies, says: “Behold, I will punish Amon, the god of the Egyptians in the city of Thebes. Yes, I will punish Egypt, her gods, her rulers, Pharaoh, and those who put their trust in him.

The fame of Moab is no more. In Heshbon, the enemy plotted Moab’s doom: ‘Come, let’s wipe her off the map.’ For indeed, my sword will leave only silence in your town named Silent.

They answer, ‘Moab is humiliated. Weep and cry for Moab, for she has been defeated!’ Announce the news beside the Arnon River: ‘Moab is devastated.’

Every head is shaved, and every beard is cut off as a sign of mourning. And around the waist is sackcloth, on all the hands are gashes.

Moab, you put your faith in your works and your wealth. That is why you, too, will be conquered. Your god Chemosh will go into captivity, along with his priests and officials.

Yahweh says to the Ammonites: “Has Israel no sons? Is there no one to inherit her land? What right did your god Molech have to take the territory of Gad, and the people of Molech to occupy its towns?

Suddenly the cup of Babylon falls to the ground and is shattered. Wail for her! Get medicine for her wounds; perhaps she can be cured.

My dear people, it’s time to mourn. Put on sackcloth and sprinkle ashes on yourselves. Mourn as you would for an only child. Wail bitterly, for suddenly the destroyer will be upon us.

Listen all you who are rich, for it’s time to weep and howl over the misery that will overtake you!

Joshua sent spies from Jericho to Ai (a small city near Beth Aven, southeast of Bethel), with orders to spy out the land. So the spies left for Ai.

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not yield to fear nor shrink back because of Israel’s failure. Now, get up, take all your soldiers with you, and march against Ai. See, I have handed over to you the city, the king, his people, and his land.

Then Joshua burned Ai to the ground and reduced it to a mound of ruins for all time. It remains desolate to this day.
