The Passion Translation

The destroyer will attack every city; not one will escape. This enemy will ruin both the valleys and the plains, just as Yahweh has said.

Their widows became more numerous than the sands of the seas. In broad daylight, I have brought against them an unexpected destroyer to kill young men and mothers alike. Suddenly, I brought upon them terror and panic.

‘Behold, I will summon my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, along with all the northern armies, and bring them to fight against this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction and make them a desolation. I will turn them into ruins forever. Everyone will be utterly astonished by the sight of what I have done to them.

You who live in Fair Dibon, come down from your prideful place and sit in the dust. For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you and has destroyed your fortresses.

An enemy has come to destroy Babylon. They have captured Babylon’s soldiers and broken their bows into pieces. For Yahweh is a God of recompense; he never fails to repay.

My dear people, it’s time to mourn. Put on sackcloth and sprinkle ashes on yourselves. Mourn as you would for an only child. Wail bitterly, for suddenly the destroyer will be upon us.

Therefore, behold! I will let your enemies clear out the cities that defend the border of Moab—your fine cities, jewels of your land—Beth Jeshimoth, Baal-Meon, and Kiriathaim.

Heshbon and all its surrounding towns on the plain, including Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon,

including all the cities of the plain, and the whole kingdom of Sihon the Amorite, who had ruled at Heshbon. Moses defeated him and the Midianite tribal chiefs, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who dwelt in the land as princes of Sihon.

These tribes occupied the land as far southeast as the city of Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, including the city in the middle of the valley and the plain from Dibon in the south, north to Medeba.
