Even if a king had the best-equipped army, it would never be enough to save him. Even if the best warrior went to battle, he could not be saved simply by his strength alone.

Therefore, the sovereign Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, will send a devastating plague among Assyria’s proud warriors. Yes, the “glory” of Assyria will be burned and go up in smoke!

He boasted, “Look what I have done by the strength of my hand and by my wisdom. See how clever I am! I have erased the borders of nations and plundered their treasures. I have been like a mighty conqueror, subduing those in strong fortresses.

Yahweh says, “Egypt’s allies will fall, and the pride of Egypt’s might will crumble. They will fall by the sword from Migdol in the north to Syene in the south. I, Yahweh, have spoken.

Your proud heart has deceived you. Your pride rests in thinking everyone is afraid of you. But I, Yahweh, say to you whose home is in the rocky cliffs, who live high on the mountaintop, though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will topple you from your high place!

Yahweh says: “The wise must not boast in their wisdom, the mighty must not boast in their power, and the wealthy must not boast in their riches.

How dare you say, ‘We are wise, because we have the law of Yahweh?’ Look! The scribes teach lies about the law. They have made the law itself into a lie!

We have heard about Moab’s pride. How haughty she is—filled with arrogance and insolence, with nothing more than empty boasts!

My faith shelters my soul continually in Yahweh. Why would you say to me: “Run away while you can! Fly away like a bird to hide in the mountains for safety.
