“Oh, sword in the hand of Yahweh, how long until you rest? Go back into your sheath, rest and be still!

Arise, God, and confront them! Challenge them with your might! Free me from their clutches and rescue me from their rage.

Is the axe greater than the one who wields it? Is the saw greater than the one who cuts with it? Can the axe strike without a hand to move it? Can a lifeless wooden cane walk all by itself?

Woe to arrogant Assyria, the rod of my anger! The club I place in the king’s hand is my fury.

Many destroyers have marched over those barren hills. Yahweh’s sword has devoured the people throughout the land; no one is safe.

How much longer will the land mourn? How much longer must the birds and animals perish? Even the grass of every field withers because of the wickedness of these people! For the people boast, “God doesn’t see what happens to us.”

For Yahweh says, “I will send them four destroyers—the sword to slay, the dogs to drag away, the wild animals to devour, and the birds of prey to consume them.

“You will say to each one, ‘Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, the God of Israel, says to you: Drink from this cup that is full of the wine of my wrath. Vomit, fall over, and rise no more. And when I send war against the nations, you will be completely defeated.’

How long must I see their battle flags and hear their shofars blaring for battle?

“Cursed be the one who does the work of Yahweh halfheartedly, and cursed be the one who withholds his sword from blood.

“I, Yahweh, have decreed war against the Chaldeans, against the people of Babylon, and against her mighty rulers and advisers.

“Or suppose I were to bring war upon that country, sending enemies with swords to devastate the land and wipe out both people and animals.

“ ‘Put the sword back in its scabbard. I will punish you in the land where you were born, the land of your origin.

Jesus ordered Peter, “Put your sword away! Do you really think I will avoid the suffering which my Father has assigned to me?”
