The people of Gaza will mourn with great sorrow, for Ashkelon has been destroyed. You descendants of the giants, how long will you slash yourselves?

The people of Dibon went to their temple to weep; they went up to their high places to lament. Moab wails with sorrow over what happened to Mount Nebo and Mount Medeba. Humiliated, every head is shaved bald and every beard cut off.

Yahweh spoke to me again and said:

The least and the greatest alike will die in this land. They will not be buried. No one will mourn for them, cut themselves, or shave their heads to show their grief.

eighty men arrived from the towns of Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria. They were on their way to the temple to offer gifts of grain and incense to Yahweh. They had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes, and cut themselves because they were mourning.

Yahweh gave the prophet Jeremiah a message for the Philistines before Pharaoh attacked Gaza.

For the day has come for all the Philistines to be destroyed, for Tyre and Sidon to be stripped of every ally they have left. Yes, Yahweh is destroying the Philistines, the survivors from the Isle of Crete.

Every head is shaved, and every beard is cut off as a sign of mourning. And around the waist is sackcloth, on all the hands are gashes.

Therefore, Lord Yahweh says to you: My hand will be against the Philistines; I will exterminate the Cherethite tribe and destroy the rest of the coastal peoples.

Terror covers them as they put on sackcloth. Shame covers their faces as they shave their heads bald.

Day and night he could be found lurking in the cemetery or in the vicinity, shrieking and cutting himself with stones!

The men of Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon, Ekron, and the territories surrounding each of these cities.
