The Passion Translation

This disaster came to your people because of their evil deeds; they have worshiped foreign gods, which they have previously known nothing about nor have their ancestors. They have brought them offerings and provoked my anger.

Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because their words and their works are defiant before the face of the Lord’s glorious presence.

For I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, planted you and have decreed disaster against you because of the evil of the people of Israel and the people of Judah. You have provoked me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”

“And when you prophesy all these words to that people, and they ask you, ‘Why has Yahweh decreed all this great evil against us? What is the wrong and the sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God?’

the reply will be, ‘Because they forsook the covenant with Yahweh their God and worshiped and served other gods.’ ”

because they have refused to listen to my words,” declares Yahweh, “although I have sent all my servants the prophets to them over and over, but still they closed their ears,” declares Yahweh.

From their earliest history, the people of Israel and Judah alike have done evil in my presence. In fact, the people of Israel have done nothing but make me angry by their actions, declares Yahweh.

This disaster has plainly overtaken you because you sinned and offered incense to other gods, refusing to listen to the voice of Yahweh or follow his law, his teachings, and his commandments.”

Why do you keep provoking my wrath by offering incense to Egyptian gods where you have settled? Are you bent on your own destruction? Don’t you realize you will become a curse and a laughingstock for all the nations of the earth?

And when people ask you, ‘Why did Yahweh our God bring this tragedy upon us?’ You will answer, ‘As you have forsaken Yahweh and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a foreign land.’

I, Yahweh, promise to hold them accountable for these things. I will be justified to punish a nation such as this.

Yet, I am not the one they are hurting, says Yahweh; they are hurting themselves to their own shame.

Jerusalem has committed a horrible sin and has become an object of scorn. All who once honored her now despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. Shunned, she groans aloud and turns to hide her face in shame.

Yet this happened because of the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, who shed innocent blood in the heart of the city.

He answered me, “The guilt of the people of Israel and Judah is enormous. The land is full of bloodshed, and Jerusalem full of perverted justice. They say, ‘Yahweh can’t see us! He has abandoned the nation.’

Yet we have sinned, acted wickedly, and done evil; we have rebelled and turned aside from your laws and commands.

The same people who were delivered from bondage and brought out of Egypt by Moses, were the ones who heard and still rebelled.
