Then Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, the military leaders, and all the people from the least to the greatest who were with him, approached

This is what the Lord says about these people: “They come near to me with hollow words and honor me superficially with their lips; all the while their hearts run far away from me! Their worship is nothing more than man-made rules.

“Listen carefully, O Jacob’s tribes, you who are called by the name Israel and come from the lineage of Judah, who solemnly swear in the name of Yahweh and claim to worship the God of Israel. But there is no truth or righteousness in your confession!

King Zedekiah sent two men to me with a request, Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah. They said to me, “Please intercede to Yahweh our God that he would help us.”

One day Johanan son of Kareah and all the military leaders still in the field came to Mizpah to meet with Gedaliah.

Those who came to Gedaliah at Mizpah included Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the army officers with him heard of all the murderous evil that Ishmael had done.

So Johanan and all the army officers with him rescued all of Ishmael’s prisoners from Mizpah—the soldiers, women, children, and royal officials taken captive after Ishmael murdered Gedaliah. Johanan brought them all back alive from Gibeon.

that you are in danger of your very lives. You deceived me when you sent me to Yahweh your God and said, ‘Pray for us to Yahweh our God; whatever he says, we will do it.’

So I called together Johanan, the military leaders, and all the people who were with him without distinction

Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and other arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying. Yahweh our God did not tell you to say to us, ‘Do not go live in Egypt.’

I will make sure that the remnant of Judah who were determined to live in Egypt will die in Egypt. You will all be killed by the sword or die of starvation, from least to greatest. You will die such horrible deaths in war or from starvation that people of other nations will use you as an object of horror, a curse word, and mockery.

“From the smallest to the greatest, they are greedy for corrupt profits; prophet and priest alike, they all practice deceit.

Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to those who will take over the land. From the smallest to the greatest, they are all greedy for corrupt profits; priest and prophet alike, they all practice deceit.

God’s Spirit swept me off my feet and transported me to the eastern gate of the temple of Yahweh. And behold, there at the entrance to the gate facing east stood twenty-five men, including the two officials Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah.

They all flock to you to sit at your feet as my people. They listen to your words, but they will not act on them. Instead, they express genuine devotion to Yahweh, but their hearts are set on cheating others.

Worshiping these animals were seventy leaders of Israel, and standing among them was Jaazaniah son of Shaphan. Each one had an incense burner in his hand, from which rose a fragrant cloud of incense.

These people honor me only with their words, for their hearts are so very distant from me.

Everyone, from the least to the greatest among them, was dazzled by his sorcery, saying, “This man is the greatest wizard of all! The divine power of God walks among us!”
