Jeremiah 39:4

The Passion Translation

Upon seeing them at the Middle Gate, Zedekiah and all his soldiers tried to escape the city under cover of darkness. They went by way of the king’s garden and slipped through the gate between the two city walls and headed toward the Jordan River Valley.

You built a reservoir between the two walls in the city to conserve water flowing down from the old pool, but you gave no thought to the one who made it. You did not trust in the one who formed it long ago!

All your leaders have fled far away, and those who were found were taken captive— before they even shot a single arrow.

I will bring distress to Ariel and there will be great mourning. Jerusalem will be to me as the meaning of the name Ariel—a burning altar hearth.

Their ruler will shoulder his pack, and they will dig a hole in the wall to let him out at night. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land he is leaving.

While everyone is watching, pack your things like a refugee’s bundle, by daylight, and leave like an exile at sunset.
