Therefore, I have withheld the rains, and the spring showers have not come. Yet, there you sit with the shameless, brazen look of a prostitute who refuses to blush.

The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “I slept with my father last night. Tonight, it’s your turn. We’ll get him drunk with wine, and you can sleep with him and we can preserve our family line through our father.”

The wicked are shameless and stubborn, but the lovers of God have a holy confidence.

I will make it a wasteland, and no one will cultivate the land. It will grow only weeds and thorns! I will command the clouds and they will not drop their rain upon it!

This is what Yahweh spoke to me concerning the drought:

Can any of the false gods of foreign nations give us rain? Can the skies by themselves give showers? Only you can, O  Yahweh, our God! So, we place all our hope in you, for only you accomplish all these things.

The elite send their servants for water, but when they come to the cisterns, they are bone dry. So, they return with their vessels empty. Humiliated, they cover their faces with shame.

Since there has been no rain, the ground is dry and cracked at harvest season, and the farmers hang their heads in humiliation.

“Get a scroll and write on it every word that I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations from the first time I spoke to you when Josiah was king up to now.

They never say in their heart, “Let us now give reverence to Yahweh our God who gives us showers at the time of his favor, the early and latter rain in its season, and graciously gives us a harvest each year.”

The guilt of your sins has upset nature’s order and withheld my blessings from you. Your sins have kept these good things from you!’ ”

Yahweh, your eyes search for truth. You struck them down, but they felt no pain. You nearly destroyed them, but they still refused to accept correction. Their stubborn faces hardened like rock; they defiantly refused to repent.

Although they have acted shamefully and committed abhorrent acts, they feel no shame; they don’t even know how to blush. They will fall among the fallen and stumble in their time of reckoning, I, Yahweh, have spoken.”

Why is the land burned and destroyed, left like an uninhabited wilderness? Who is wise enough to understand this? Who is the prophet with a word from Yahweh to explain it?

but the people of Israel will refuse to listen to you because they refuse to listen to me. The whole family of Israel has a hard heart and is stubbornly defiant.

Make very sure that you never refuse to listen to God when he speaks! For the God who spoke on earth from Sinai is the same God who now speaks from heaven. Those who heard him speak his living Word on earth found nowhere to hide, so what chance is there for us to escape if we turn our backs on God and refuse to hear his warnings as he speaks from heaven?
